Have a look at some vintage Epiphone guitar catalogues But perhaps the best known guitars built by Epiphone were those manufactured at the Gibson Kalamazoo plant – the CMI period. CMI bought out a struggling Epiphone in , buying tooling, parts, and even unfinished instruments. Production of hollow-bodied jazz guitars and acoustic upright basses began immediately. But before long Epiphone was producing new lines, unrelated to the output of previous years. Thinline semi acoustics like the Epiphone Casino , Sorrento , Riviera and Sheraton were soon joined by solid bodies like the Epiphone Wilshire , Crestwood and Coronet ; all distributed to dealers that wanted Gibson-quality instruments, but did not qualify to be Gibson stockists themselves. Gibson ran a whole block in Kalamazoo giving their address as Parsons Street, whilst Epiphone were officially situated on Bush Street; just the other side of the block. The instruments were made side by side, both using the same woods, construction methods, and many of the same components. Unlike today, the s US-built Epiphone line was aimed at exactly the same market as the Gibson equivalent instruments. Epiphone guitars quickly found favour in the mid s music scene; bands like the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Animals and the Kinks all played Epiphones, along with many more. The Norlin period Norlin period Epiphones were initially made in Japan; they were no longer rebranded Gibson guitars, but a new budget line aimed at younger guitarists.

Tweet on Twitter Mention the subject of American acoustic guitars and one of the first names that will undoubtedly pop into your head will be C. A pretty impressive achievement. Bring up the topic of electrics, and Martin is hardly the first name of recall. Most coverage of the Martin brand is focused, quite rightly, on their substantial acoustic achievements.
The primary starting point for information about Martin guitars is, of course, Martin Guitars: These pickups were the DeArmond humbuckers with chrome sides and a black center in a trapezoidal hole, large pole pieces along one side and smaller poles along the other.
Like the GR, there are three versions of the G and G guitars, distinguished by changes to the PC board. I was contacted by a G player in the States and a G player in Norway both using the first run, early “prerelease” version of the guitar electronics.
History[ edit ] Under the ownership of Epaminondas “Epi” Stathopoulo , Epiphone was a leading manufacturer of hollow-body and archtop guitars. Epi Stathopoulos died in Control of the company went to his brothers, Orphie and Frixo. In , a four-month-long strike forced a relocation of Epiphone from New York to Philadelphia. The company was bought out by their main rival, Gibson in In , Gibson began to expand upon its Epiphone line of semi-hollow guitars.
They reworked Epiphone’s old Century archtop into a thinline electric fitted with a single P This was followed by the introduction of a twin-pickup, double-cut thinline semi-hollowbody, the Sheraton. The original Gibson-made Epiphone Sheratons were up until , when production moved to Japan, and major design changes began to occur. It featured the same double rounded horns, and had similarly placed electronics.
The Sheraton was fitted with a set glued-in neck, in accordance with Gibson’s standard practice. Distinguishing characteristics of the Sheraton included its multiple body binding like that of its top of the line Gibson cousin, the ES ; its Frequensator tail piece; and its headstock and fretboard inlays. Unlike any of the semi-hollowbodies in the Gibson line, the Sheraton’s headstock featured Epiphone’s traditional fancy vine or “tree of life” inlay on its headstock, while its fretboard featured a block and triangle or “V” inlay of mother-of-pearl and abalone, as well as binding on the fretboard’s surface, inset slightly from the outer edges.

Among the Fender Japanese guitars, there were two different logos used: Crafted in Japan and Made in Japan, and both were being made at the same time from till I have more info on the MIJ Reissues page. One is that there was a reorganizing of where the parts were being make in the large, expansive Fugi Gen Gakki company. The island of Matsumoto is where the Fugi plant is located.
I was told by a former Fender Rep that the necks were made one place and the bodies another, while the electronics were made in yet another. I was told that the contract with Yamoto stated if any major subcontractor was to be changed the weaning process would have to take place MIJ to CIJ. This freed up a lot of space in the plant. Yamara and Gotoh retooled to handle the woodwork and finish aspects of the guitars—thus the Crafted in Japan line was created.
Regarding quailty, I have owned many of both these Japanese guitars and it is a fallacy that the Made in Japan models are better than the Crafted in Japan or vice versa. As far as I am concerned, the quality of either is much better than the Mexican made guitars and rival many of the USA models.

Neck Plates Brass – No Markings The solid brass neck plate was commonly found on pre-serialized prepro Charvel guitars that were manufactured between and late In fact, the majority of Charvel prepro guitars manufactured, used this style neck plate. These plates were polished only on the exposed side and then cleared lacquered. The back of the plate was not finished and typically appears raw and generally quite oxidized. It is common to see the lacquer chipped worn around the edges of these neck plates.

These models were Fender models and not Squier models. The Squier series were also made available for the Japanese market in October , which incorporated small changes compared to the export Squier series. The large Fender logo of the export Squier series was soon changed to a large Squier logo. The SQ Squier series was introduced in late to early There were some JV serial numbered Squiers based on 70’s models as well with the larger head stock and a 3 bolt neck plate.
These were intended for the Japanese domestic market and were given a JV serial number, but they are identical to SQ Squiers that were exported at the time. Vista models[ edit ] In , Squier began to manufacture the Vista Series, which saw them introducing their own unique guitar designs independent from the Fender mother company for the first time. Made in the same factory as the Japanese Fenders of the era, they were known as high quality guitars.
Later, in 97, a guitar version of the Musicmaster Bass was added, though it should be noted this was based on the bass design, and not the Fender Musicmaster guitar design of the s. By the Vista Series was discontinued.
This is one of the most frustrating questions from the MIJ collector. People often make the mistake of citing the American or European importer as the ‘maker’ of the guitar, when in fact several Japanese manufacturers were producing badged guitars out of their plants and shipping them to America and Europe to sell. Japanese manufacturers made multiple badges at the same plant, many of whom resemble each other closely.
