At first, every player has 15 seconds to vote for a hero to get banned. All players select a hero at the same time. A hero may only be voted once. Two players cannot vote for the same hero. The game displays heroes as they are voted on, but not who voted. After the 15 seconds, half of the heroes that were voted on get randomly selected and banned.

Save Valve Valve is changing the way Dota 2 is played, at least on a meta level. Beginning May 4th , players will be required to register a unique phone number to their accounts in order to queue up for ranked matches. That’s one account per phone number, ostensibly placing a hard limit on the number of ranked accounts that any one player can have.
Before you get any fresh ideas, Valve says online services that provide virtual phone numbers won’t work in this new system. The move is designed to curb the practice of smurfing — when a high-ranked player creates a new account and jumps into competitive matches against people of vastly lower skill levels. Notice the developers don’t promise to stop smurfing entirely.
The non-virtual phone number requirement makes it really difficult to establish more than one ranked Dota 2 account, but Valve seems to recognize some players will inevitably sneak their way around it. Smurfing isn’t a problem just for Dota 2. Valve previously implemented Prime Matchmaking in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive requiring a phone number for ranked play, but that program is opt-in.
The developers of other competitive online titles, including League of Legends ‘ Riot Games, are also looking for ways to combat harmful smurfing practices. Meanwhile, Overwatch director Jeff Kaplan recently said he didn’t think smurfing was a big deal at all.

Today many people are familiar with this puzzle and its solution. In the s, however, very few were even aware of its existence, even though it had been around for almost a century. If you have tried solving this puzzle, you can confirm that your first attempts usually involve sketching lines inside the imaginary square. The correct solution, however, requires you to draw lines that extend beyond the area defined by the dots.
Only 20 percent managed to break out of the illusory confinement and continue their lines in the white space surrounding the dots. The symmetry, the beautiful simplicity of the solution, and the fact that 80 percent of the participants were effectively blinded by the boundaries of the square led Guilford and the readers of his books to leap to the sweeping conclusion that creativity requires you to go outside the box. Valve is hoping to cut down on the number of high-level players that use multiple accounts for ranked matches of Dota 2 by requiring players to register their phone numbers ahead of queuing up.
This update might pull me back in, as I like the sound of what they’re doing to improve the experience. One thing did always sour the experience, which was the community when you’re not playing with friends. They seem to be making some more steps towards cleaning it up. Now, persistent bad behaviour can result in a six month ban from matchmaking. A good step, because some people are incredibly toxic. However, it’s a free game so there’s not a lot stopping them making another Steam account, although I imagine it will be enough to make some people rethink their attitude.
On top of that, your actual selected language will now play more of a role in matchmaking. I hope they mean that too, because being put into a group full of people who don’t speak you language, was something that also ruined a fair amount of games for me. With those two changes alone, it might make the experience quite a lot better. There’s also a handy new trainer included to help those of you struggling to get gold, they’ve put in a “last hit” trainer you get gold if you hit creeps last when they die that can be played anytime you want, even while queuing for a game.
For those of you who enjoy the custom game modes, you will be pleased to know that they now use dedicated servers to improve performance. Not only that, but custom game developers can also opt-in to have penalties for players who who abandon or fail to ready up, giving them a cool-down. They’ve been playing for about 10 years from the original DoTA and fortunately I’ve learnt a significant amount from them. But what I don’t get is the exorbitant amount of flame the community gives noobs. Clearly I’m playing badly in a pub game because I’m new.
